Tesla is advertizing a carbon-ceramic brake kit for the 2022 Model S Plaid, as first noticed by Reddit’s u/BrandonNeider. The addition to the range may address performance concerns raised by those reviewing the high-performance model.
“Designed for the ultimate track experience, the Model S Plaid Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit is a complete hardware package that deliver maximum, repeatable stopping power during high-performance driving,” Tesla writes on its website.
Along with 410mm (16.1-inch) carbon-silicon carbide front and rear rotors, the kit also includes 6-piston calipers at the front and 4-piston calipers at the back. It also comes with high-performance brake pads and a bottle of high-temperature brake fluid.

Although it has been wowing on the drag strip, the Telsa Model S Plaid has been accused of having insufficient brakes that overheat too quickly. Indeed, the Engineering Explained YouTube channel recently pointed out that the car can accelerate from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in less time than it can stop from that speed.
Although the brakes may be more than sufficient for legal on-road driving, the cast-iron discs simply don’t keep up with modern supercar technology. And that matters because the Tesla Model S Plaid kicks out 1,020 hp (1,034 PS/761 kW) and is the fastest production electric vehicle ever around the Nurburgring.
It will be interesting to see if the Model S Plaid can improve on its 7:30.909 lap time with these new brakes. The kit may be one of many performance options on the way, as spy photos have shown Model S test cars lapping the track with options like active aero.
For those interested in the brakes, Tesla says that the kit will be available in mid-2022. Be forewarned, though, that it will only be compatible with vehicles fitted with 21-inch Arachnid wheels.
