During the LA Auto Show, NACTOY announced the nine finalists that will compete for the 2022 North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year. The finalists were chosen by an independent jury of 50 automotive journalists from US and Canada, among 23 semifinalists across three categories.
The three finalists for the title of the 2022 North American Car of the Year are the Honda Civic (in hatchback and sedan form), the Lucid Air, and the VW Golf VIII (in R / GTI spec). Two of them are direct rivals in the compact segment while the other one is a fully electric sedan.

For the 2022 North American Truck of the Year, the battle rages between the Ford Maverick, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, and the Rivian R1T. Again we have two direct competitors in the compact truck segment and a fully electric model that is one of the most interesting premieres of the year.
Finally, for the 2022 North America Utility Vehicle of the Year, we have three quite different contestants. The Ford Bronco, which is a traditional off-roader, the Genesis GV70 that is a premium SUV, and the Hyundai IONIQ 5 which is a fully electric crossover.
Out of the nine finalists, Hyundai Group is represented with three vehicles, Ford has two, while Honda, Lucid, Rivian, VW each have one, with NACTOY president Gary Witzenburg stating “These nine vehicles represent an unusually excellent and diverse group of finalists.”
The jurors have tested all vehicles and cast their votes based on factors like automotive innovation, design, safety, performance, technology, driver satisfaction, and the value of each entry. The final voting for the awards will take place between December 30 and January 5, with the announcement of the winners following in early January 2022.
