Toyota and Daihatsu presented their latest collaboration in the form of three closely-related minivans or MPVs for those of you on the other side of the pond. The new generation of the Toyota Avanza, Toyota Veloz, and Daihatsu Xenia that were unveiled in Indonesia are essentially the same car in slightly different flavors.

All three models are based on Daihatsu’s DNGA platform – a budget version of Toyota’s own TNGA architecture – which also underpins the Toyota Raize / Daihatsu Rocky B-SUV siblings. This time, however, it has been stretched for its new role – the MPVs featuring three rows of seats are measuring 4,395 mm (173 inches) in length with a 2,750 mm (108 inches) wheelbase.

The engine range includes two naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engines. The smaller 1.3-liter unit produces  97 hp (72 kW / 98 PS), while the 1.5-liter produces 105 hp (78 kW / 106 PS). Both are sending power to the front axle through a five-speed manual gearbox or a CVT.

Bear in mind that the previous generations of the Avanca, Veloz, and Xenia were ladder-frame rear-wheel-drive MPVs so the new underpinnings really make a difference both in packaging and in driving dynamics.

As you can see from the pictures, the minivans share most of their body panels. More specifically, the Toyota Avanza and the Daihatsu Xenia are almost identical with differences limited to the front bumper, grille, badges, and trim pieces between the taillights and on the decorative diffuser. The Toyota Veloz on the other hand differentiates itself more as a sportier and more premium model thanks to the redesigned bumpers and taillights.

Inside the cabin, there is plenty of space for up to seven passengers in three rows of seats, with the second row folding to create a comfortable couch/bed for the family. The dashboard is pretty standard in terms of styling with an infotainment screen on top of the center console measuring 7 or 9 inches depending on the variant.

The three models are differentiated by the interior trim and available equipment. As you would expect the Veloz has the most complete list of features with fabric/leather upholstery, ambient lighting, roof-mounted screen for the rear passengers, automatic climate control, wireless charging pad, parking sensors, and the complete Toyota Safety Sense kit.

Pricing starts from 190,900,000 rupiah ($13,392) for the cheapest Daihatsu Xenia, from 206.200,000 rupiah ($14,468) for the Toyota Avanza, and from 251,200,000 rupiah ($17,622) for the Toyota Veloz.
