Volkswagen has published a new teaser for the new-generation Amarok including sketches of the exterior and the interior, while confirming it will be unveiled in 2022 with a new production site in South Africa. The official sketches are following earlier teasers from March 2020 and from March 2021, showing a slightly evolved design that is closer to production.
The all-new VW Amarok will be sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Ranger but it will feature a different design. While the hardpoints and the greenhouse will be identical between the two popular pickups, the Amarok will feature unique body panels adopting Volkswagen’s own design language.
At the front, the headlights are integrated within the grille being connected by a LED strip while the sculpted bonnet and the muscular fenders give a rugged feel to the pickup. In the latest teaser, the Amarok is depicted with off-road tires and extra equipment on the roof as part of the Wilderness Foundation Africa (WFA) campaign for rhinoceros protection. The outgoing model has been assisting in the same role for wildlife preservation in South Africa since 2011.

The second sketch is showing the interior for the first time. The similarities with the Ranger are evident in the large touchscreen and the digital instrument cluster however there are differences including the VW steering wheel, the redesigned dashboard with large storage compartments, and the trim on the seats.
VW is proud of the off-road capabilities of the new Amarok saying that it will “Not be deterred by any rough terrain”. The company also claims that the new generation will “feature innovations that have not been seen before in this segment”, together with “significantly more driver assistance systems”.
The new pickup was developed by teams in Australia and Europe. Unlike its predecessor that was produced in Hannover, Germany, the new Amarok will be produced in Silverton (South Africa) and will continue to be built in Pacheco (Argentina). Sales will commence in Europe from late 2022, followed by other markets. Since its debut in 2010, Volkswagen has sold more than 800,000 units of the Amarok.
