For those familiar with the United States’ car import laws, you’re probably aware that vehicles must be at least 25 years old in order to get them into the country (with a few exceptions). Given that, you could probably imagine our surprise when we stumbled upon a 2017 VW Amarok, a four-year-old pickup truck never available in the US that was up for sale at a Michigan dealership.
Listed for sale at Garage Kept Motors for $44,900 (but now sold), the truck was imported from Mexico and titled in Michigan, where it now has 48,127 km (29,904 miles) on the odometer. According to The Drive, who reached out to the dealership, in order to bypass the 25-year rule the pickup was registered as a farm truck. Mind you, while that loophole may work in Michigan, it might not fly in other states.

The four-door Amarok features a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder, a 6-speed manual transmission, and four-wheel drive. It also boasts a handful of modifications, some of which include an APR Stage 1 tune, new wheels, off-road tires, a new head unit and sound system, and an aftermarket GPS. Stock power is rated at 138 hp (140 PS / 103 kW) and 251 lb-ft (340 Nm) of torque, though the listing says the tune increased those figures. That’s not all that much by US standards, but then again, this pickup was never meant to compete in the US market.

In the end, despite this truck’s high price and low power compared to its competition, for the right person it could be worth it to say they own what is possibly the only VW Amarok in the United States. Do you think this forbidden fruit in truck form was worth the price? Let us know in the comments.
