At the Guangzhou Auto Show last November, BYD introduced us to the Destroyer 05, a plug-in hybrid sedan for the Chinese market with up to 120 km (75 miles) of pure electric range. Now, the company showed us the interior which gets a huge Tesla-like infotainment touchscreen and many tech features.
The fancy name is part of the “Warship” series of plug-in hybrids, sold alongside the “Marine Life” series of electric vehicles in BYD’s newly established Ocean Net sales network.

In terms of size, the Destroyer 05 is positioned between the Toyota Corolla and Camry sedans, measuring 4,780 mm (188.2 inches) long, 1,837 mm (72.3 inches) wide, and 1,495 mm (58.9 inches) tall with a wheelbase of 2,718 mm (107 inches). The exterior design is pretty standard for a Chinese sedan with thin LED lighting units, a large grille covering most of the front bumper, and an aerodynamic silhouette.
Inside, the main focus goes to the 15.6-inch touchscreen which is combined with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. There are a few buttons on the central tunnel including a cylindrical knob for the automatic gearbox, a driving mode selector, a start-stop button, and a set of cupholders. We can also see ambient lighting on the dashboard, red accents on the climate vents, and white-upholstered seats with integrated headrests.

The Destroyer 05 is offered in two plug-in hybrid variants featuring BYD’s DM-i super hybrid system with two battery sizes. Both versions are fitted with a 1.5-liter petrol engine producing 109 hp (81 kW / 110 PS) and come with either one or two electric motors for a combined output of 177 hp (132 kW / 179 PS) or 194 hp (145 kW / 197 PS) respectively. The smallest battery is offering an electric range of 55 km (34 miles) while the larger one allows it to travel up to 120 km (75 miles) on electric power alone. Note that those numbers are likely calculated under China’s WLTC protocol.
BYD has yet to announce pricing for the Destroyer 05 but reports from local media suggest it will cost between 120,000-150,000 yuan, which translates roughly to $19,000-24,000.
