If things go as planned, the Detroit Auto Show will finally return in September 2022 after recently receiving a $9 million grant from the local government.

Included within a local $795 million spending bill is a one-time grant of $9 million that will be used to re-establish the show which last took place in January 2019.

The Detroit Auto Show was already experiencing issues prior to the COVIS-19 pandemic. The show has traditionally taken place in January but in 2020, the Detroit Auto Dealers Association planned to shift it to early summer. This scheduling change couldn’t have been made at a worse time as in June 2020, the show was canceled because of the pandemic.

“This is just to help them get back, get them up and running again,” House Appropriations Committee chairman Thomas Albert, R-Lowell, told Auto News. “It’s really important for the state of Michigan.”

Organizers plan on hosting the next Detroit Auto Show in September 2022 at Detroit’s newly named Huntington Place riverfront convention center. A number of changes will be made to how the show operates and it is expected to make use of the city’s various parks for outdoor displays and activities.

“While each previous show has funded the next show, a nearly 3-year void led us to ask for direct support from the state of Michigan,” Detroit Auto Dealers Association executive director Rod Alberts said. “This one time, one time, funding will help put the show back on strong financial footing and go toward making a 2022 show the best one yet – showcasing all things Michigan has to offer on the automotive front.”
