The Tesla Cybertruck has been delayed until next year, but it appears the production model will be more advanced than originally thought.
In a tweet, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced plans for a new four-motor variant with “independent, ultra fast response torque control of each wheel.” Little else is known about this version of the truck, but the outspoken executive said production will initially be limited to this variant.
The news is a bit surprising as Tesla originally said there would be three versions of the Cybertruck. The entry-level model was slated to start at $39,900 and have a single rear electric motor as well as a 250+ mile (402+ km) range. One step up was the dual-motor all-wheel drive variant, which was to begin at $49,900 and have a range in excess of 300 miles (483 km). Lastly, there was a $69,900 tri-motor variant that promised to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in less than 2.9 seconds and have a range of more than 500 miles (805 km).

Of course, Tesla deleted all of those details from the company’s website earlier this year and this sparked rumors about possible changes. That’s now been confirmed with the tweet about the quad motor variant and it’s interesting that Musk made the comment when replying to a post about the Cybertruck only being offered in two, three, and four motor configurations.
That wasn’t the only Cybertruck news made by Musk as he said the model will have front and rear steering so it can “drive diagonally like a crab.” This sounds like Tesla is planning their own version of the GMC Hummer EV’s Crabwalk Mode.
