Honda will bring the new generation Civic Type R at the Tokyo Auto Salon this January, but the model will keep its special camouflage. This will be the first public appearance of the hot hatch in prototype form before its confirmed debut in 2022.

After numerous sightings from our spy photographers with heavy camo, Honda dressed the Type R in their special wrap created specifically for the model. Look closely and you will notice the famous letter repeated all around the bodywork together with white outlines of past Type R models.

While the camo prevents us from getting the whole picture, it can’t hide the redesigned aero package that includes wider fenders, sporty bumpers, a large rear wing, and a rear diffuser with three centrally mounted exhaust pipes.

The prototype of the Civic Type R has been spotted at the Nurburgring in Germany, while a few weeks ago, Honda gave us a behind-the-scenes look during testing at the Suzuki Circuit in Japan. This makes us believe that the model will attempt to regain the lap records of its predecessor, reclaiming its title as the king of FWD hot hatches.

Despite the electrification trend, the Civic Type R is expected to retain the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 310 hp (228 kW / 314 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque in its predecessor, as well as the six-speed manual gearbox sending power to the front axle. The new generation will likely bring more power in order to stay in line with the competition, while the upgraded chassis and electronics will make it faster around the track.

Visitors to the Tokyo Auto Salon will be able to see the Civic Type R prototype in the flesh from January 14 to 16. The official debut of the performance-focused Civic is scheduled for later in 2022.
