The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has the potential to shake up the supercar pecking order and while pricing details haven’t been confirmed, it is expected to significantly undercut its rivals. It’s little wonder then why Top Gear was so excited when it had the chance to check out the car in the flesh.

As you probably already know, the key highlight of the new Corvette Z06 is its engine. Whereas the standard Corvette Stingray has a 6.2-liter V8 shared with other GM models, the 5.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8 LT6 of the Z06 isn’t used by any other GM road car and is only shared with the C8.R racing car.

Not only is this a dry-sump engine but it also features a flat-plane crank, forged aluminum pistons, titanium connecting rods, dual throttle bodies and four-into-two-into one stainless steel exhaust headers. It pumps out 670 hp and 460 lb-ft (623 Nm) of torque. Acceleration figures haven’t been officially announced but a leak back in November suggested the car will hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.6 seconds and run down the quarter-mile in 10.6 seconds.

While checking out the car, Top Gear had the opportunity to fire up and rev this engine. It sounds pretty remarkable and revs extremely quickly. In a world where high-revving, naturally-aspirated engines are becoming increasingly rare, the Z06’s powertrain is a breath of fresh air.

Journalists have yet to have the opportunity to put the new Z06 through its paces but when they do, we expect to hear good things. Will the Corvette Z06 prove to be as good as its European rivals like the Lamborghini Huracan and Porsche 911 GT3? Only time will tell.
