With every generation, it seems BMW finds a way to make their new mid-range M cars outperform the flagship ones of the previous generation. But for similar prices, is that the case with the new M240i and a 2018 M2?
In Throttle House’s latest video, they take the two cars to a track to find out. The first test is a drag race. On paper, the M240i should win thanks to more power (382 vs. 365 hp), a quicker automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive (though it is significantly heavier), and it does, crossing the finish line multiple car lengths ahead of the M2. The next test is a roll race to hopefully eliminate the M240i’s AWD advantage, however it is not enough, as while the M2 did finish closer, it still lost out to the more powerful M240i by about a car length.

Out on the track, the M2 proved to be more engaging dynamically. The power delivery was also very natural and the driving experience provided just the right amount of difficulty so as not to make it too boring. The M240i, while a good sports car in a vacuum, it’s just a bit held back by its weight and price. Should it have been cheaper and lighter, it could’ve potentially given the M2 a run for its money, even without a third pedal.
To sum up, if you want the newer tech, all-wheel drive, and all the benefits of owning a brand new car, go with the M240i. If you want the more engaging sports car, go with the M2. And if you want to watch the full comparison for yourself, you can check out Throttle House’s video below.
