The all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS only recently touched down in the U.S. and it is already being recalled, alongside a handful of S-Class models.

A notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals that an oversight meant the MBUX infotainment system would not disable access to features such as the TV and digital owner’s manual when the vehicles are in motion. Obviously, accessing such functions while the vehicle is moving could distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash.

Mercedes-Benz reveals that the issue has been triggered due to a deviation in the documentation process in the Mercedes me connect communication system between the vehicle and a backend server.

Investigations into the issue started in mid-November when internal testing in Germany revealed that some MBUX functions and applications were not deactivated while driving. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or crashes related to the issue.

Involved in the recall are a total of 16 Mercedes-Benz S580 models built between December 8, 2020 and October 13, 2021 as well as the 2022 S500 (176 units), 2022 EQS450 (20 units), and 2022 EQS580 (15 units), all built between December 8, 2020 and October 13, 2021.

Mercedes-Benz has resolved the issue by performing an update in the backend of its computer server, meaning that the it could no longer occur beyond November 16, 2021.
