The film Back to the Future has had a groundswell of interest in the last few years, powered in no small part by Tom Holland’s own seeming desire to participate in a remake alongside Robert Downey Jr.
Whether or not that’s possible is unclear, but leaving those questions aside for now, we’re wondering who should play the film’s star. No, not Marty McFly or Doc Brown. The question is which car should replace the DeLorean Time Machine in the remake.
Sure, you could just keep the DeLorean, but since the actors would be recast, why not the car?

I think our choices should be led by a few considerations. First and foremost, Doc Brown’s line “The way I see it, if you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?” suggests that the car needs to be beautiful.
Next, if we consider the DMC Delorean’s wider context, its run was over and done with by the time the film was released in 1985, though it was still a recent car. It was also produced by a scrappy, small-time operation with a founder that had a background in the legacy automotive industry.
That all, to me, points to one car: The Fisker Karma. Although the company didn’t quite go the same way as DMC, its founder Henrik Fisker was a prominent figure in the automotive world before attempting to make his own car, much like John DeLorean. Both cars are primarily known for their lust-worthy design, and both were only produced briefly (albeit the Karma has been given a second lease on life as the Revero). They’re both oddball cars from the automotive fringe, but they somehow both have staying power in the popular imagination.
What do you think? Could the Fisker Karma make a good time machine or is there a better option we haven’t considered?
