There are very few cars that I find uglier than the Plymouth Prowler but this particular example is one that even I would love to drive.
Plymouth launched the Prowler in 1997 and over the course of five years, sold a touch over 11,000 examples. It took design inspiration from hot rods of the 1930s and left the factory with a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated Chrysler V6 with 214 hp, mated to a four-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. This Prowler, though, has ditched the factory V6 for something much more interesting.
Currently listed up for sale on Bring a Trailer, this 1999 Prowler has been equipped with a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 purchased as a crate engine and installed by a shop in North Carolina. The engine has also been upgraded with a high-performance camshaft, a double-pass aluminum radiator, and ceramic-coated stainless-steel headers running through a 3-inch stainless steel exhaust.
Drive is sent to the rear wheels courtesy of a four-speed automatic transaxle with a TCI Automotive flex plate, aftermarket friction clutches, and an upgraded torque converter and gear set. A manual transmission would make the car even cooler in our eyes but hey, you can’t have everything.
The listing adds that the bright shade of paint is dubbed Prowler Yellow and that the car now sports a large hood scoop. The standard wheels have also been powder-coated in black and it now sits on Continental ExtremeContact tires. A look inside the cabin reveals gray leather across the seats, as well as color-matched trim and carpets.
The odometer shows that the car has been driven 25,000 miles (~40,000 km) but it’s unclear if that’s the total mileage or after the installation of the Hemi V8.
