With Ken Block off to Audi for his next lot of Gymkhana episodes, fans of Ford rally cars sliding around industrial obstacle courses may have felt let down. But, fear not! Because Ford’s Romanian plant plays host to a brand new and more cinematically-filmed video showing off some of the brand new Puma Rally1, with M-Sport Ford World Rally Team (WRT) driver Adrien Fourmaux behind the wheel.

The video opens at Ford’s Craiova assembly facility in Romania, as staff prepare to celebrate the 1 millionth vehicle rolling off the production line. After hours, lightning strikes, and an electrified Fourmaux pilots the hybrid Puma Rally1 around the factory to the tune of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Throw in the obligatory jumps, slides, and fireworks, and you have yourself a textbook viral video!

Although a concept was previewed at Goodwood earlier in the year, it’s the first time the world has seen the finished Puma Rally1, which will take part in the World Rally Championship from next year. It’s also Ford’s first electrified competition car. Under the skin, the plug-in hybrid powertrain captures energy during braking and coasting and stores it in a 3.9kWh battery before using it to supplement the turbocharged 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. The extra juice from the battery is good enough for repeated boosts of up to three seconds from the 100kW electric motor.

As for the video, all actors featured in the film are Ford employees, including the Craiova plant manager and president of Ford Romania, Jo Payne. The stunts were performed by Adrien Fourmaux (Ken Block who?) using ramps and rigs developed by Ford engineers based at the facility.
