The E36-generation BMW 3-Series Compact is far from the most desirable two-door coupe out there but this particular example is special. Very special.

This 3-Series Compact is currently up for sale in Norway and the seller notes that almost 16 years ago, he embarked on an ambitious project to fit the smallest BMW available at the time with the largest BMW engine he could find. As such, the car no longer features the inline-four that it left the factory with and has a 5.6-liter naturally-aspirated V12 lifted from an 850CSi.

Coupled to this engine is a manual transmission driving the rear wheels and is good for 400 hp. We’ve got no doubt it also sounds significantly better than the original inline-four and makes this 3-Series an absolute joy to drive.

The car has been listed up for sale from Sport Auto in the town of Skien and the seller notes that it has also been upgraded with the suspension set-up of an E36 M3. It also features seats, gauges, and the dashboard of an M3. It has also been equipped with eye-catching Hartge replica wheels and has a very nice stance on the road.

With 104,000 km (~64,600 miles) on the clock, the car probably won’t drive exactly like it did when it first left the showroom floor but as long as it has been well-maintained, it should continue to run smoothly for years to come. It also won’t break the bank either with an asking price of 299,000 kr, around $33,000.
