Alfa Romeo confirmed that the much-anticipated Tonale C-SUV will debut on February 8 at 15:00 CET. The digital event is dubbed “La Metamorphosis”, obviously referring to the upcoming transformation of the Italian automaker’s range from ICE-powered to electric-only by 2027.
The Tonale was introduced in concept form back in March 2019, previewing the first electrified model of Alfa Romeo. While photos of a prototype leaked in October 2019 showing that the company had moved on with the development, the first camouflaged prototypes wearing the production body didn’t appear on public roads before August 2021.

Last year, Alfa Romeo announced that the market launch of the Tonale was delayed to mid-2022. The delay was attributed to the brand’s CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, who reportedly asked engineers to extract better performance from the plug-in hybrid system. The latter is expected to be a tuned version of the powertrain used by the mechanically-related Jeep Compass 4xe. A few months ago a prototype of the Tonale was spied with the trunk open, revealing a Jeep-branded turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder that will most likely be combined with an electric motor and a battery, allowing for an EV-only driving mode.
The reveal of the Tonale in the next few weeks means we will get to see the final product in the flesh and probably learn more about its specs. The first examples of Alfa Romeo’s new SUV model will likely be delivered in summer 2022. This will be Alfa Romeo’s third and most affordable model line next to the Giulia and Stelvio, which will hopefully help in boosting sales and profits. When the time comes, you will be able to watch the “La Metamorphosis” digital event here.
