The upcoming Audi A4 Avant has once again been caught testing. Still wearing camouflage, the car is maintaining its mystery but looks aggressive and promising.

If recent rumors about Mercedes discontinuing wagons by 2030 are true, then the next A4 Avant will have one less rival to worry about. Testing in the snow, the camouflaged test car looks right at home in colder conditions.

Although it’s hard to say for sure, the photos seem to suggest that the grille will shrink slightly, potentially as a reaction to the negative commentary that has dogged BMW’s latest big-grilled efforts. As with the new A3, though, this A4 looks to have the sculpted appeal and aggression of Audi’s new design language.

New headlights continue in Audi’s tradition of lighting excellence and look to be underlined by a streak of LEDs. The taillights remain a mystery, though, because of covers that are obscuring their shape.

Our spy photographers report that this new model appears to be bigger than the current A4 Avant and is leaning into A6 Avant territory, which perhaps isn’t surprising given the world’s love of big vehicles and crossovers.

We expect this model to be based on the MLB platform like the current A4, albeit an evolved version. A range of gas and diesel engines are expected and, like its rivals at Mercedes-AMG, Audi is reportedly looking at electrifying the high-performance RS4 with a hybrid system designed for power.

The automaker is in the midst of a big electrification push, though, so you can likely expect more new hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the A4 Avant. A fully electric version is also anticipated, which is likely to be based on Audi’s electric-only PPE platform, instead of the MLB platform.

The new Audi A4 is expected to debut in 2023, so we still have a little longer to wait before we find everything out for certain.
