Acura announced today that production of the 2022 NSXs Type S has commenced at its Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio.
The automaker says that all of its production has been spoken for and all 300 U.S.-bound models were reserved in less than 24 hours following the opening of order books in August. It adds that production will end before the end of this year.
“Today is an exciting day for PMC and Acura as we begin shipping the highly-desired NSX Type S supercar,” said PMC Division Lead Gail May. “Every associate here is committed to ensuring that each Type S we build, from VIN#001 all the way up to VIN#350, will be as perfect as the first second-generation NSX this team built in 2016.”
The first two models completed were finished in the exclusive Gotham Grey matte paint. PMC had to introduce new shipping and handling techniques to keep the matte-metallic finish safe on its way to its new owner. That includes a new protective film applied to the car, as well as a soft body cover for transportation. Acura dealers will also be getting special training to pass along instructions for proper care to owners.
The Type S is the NSX’s swansong. Featuring unique five-spoke wheels, stickier Pirelli P-Zero tires, a retuned adaptive damper system, Type S decals, and a standard carbon-fiber roof, it promises to be the best handling NSX ever.
Naturally, that means that it can handle a little more grunt in the form of the most powerful drivetrain ever developed for a production Acura. More specifically, its twin-turbo V6 and three-motor hybrid system churn out 600 hp (608 PS/447 kW) and 492 lb-ft (667 Nm) of torque that’s funneled to the all-wheel-drive system via a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. The available Lightweight Package adds carbon-ceramic brakes, a carbon-fiber engine cover, and a carbon fiber interior package, all of which lower the weight by 58 lbs (26 kg).
