Typically, a country’s best-selling automaker tends to be one from that country itself. In the case of the United States, that manufacturer was General Motors, however for the first time in 90 years, they have been passed in year-end sales. By whom, you may ask? None other than Japanese automaker Toyota.
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the switch-up was primarily brought about by the ongoing chip shortage, which has been causing disruptions in the industry left and right for quite some time now.

Toyota reported their year-end U.S. sales at 2.3 million vehicles, up 10 percent from this same time in 2020. GM on the other hand reported 2.2 million vehicles sold in 2021, or 114,000 vehicles less than Toyota and a 13 percent decrease from their own sales in 2020. The American automaker was also reportedly behind Toyota at the second and third-quarter sales reports, and while Toyota’s fourth-quarter sales did drop by 30 percent compared to 2020, GM’s fell by 43 percent, allowing Toyota to stay ahead.
“The semiconductor shortage, among other things, created an unprecedented set of circumstances in 2021,” GM said in a report from CNN Business. “Even so, GM extended its lead in full-size pickups and SUVs. And 2022 begins with a gradually improving supply chain, and that should lead to growth in 2022 as we launch several new vehicles — including EVs and redesigned pickups.”

Additional foreign automakers, such as Hyundai, Mazda, Volkswagen, and BMW, have also increased in U.S. year-end sales according to research firm Cox Automotive. In particular, Hyundai’s American sales of 738,081 units marked a significant 19 percent increase compared to 2020 as well as a sales record for the Korean car company.
Other companies who haven’t yet reported their year-end sales figures are expected to do so this week, so we will have to wait and see where the rest of them fall on the list.
