The Tesla Model 3 Performance has been the reigning champion of drag racing, embarrassing even some supercars in the quarter mile. But can the BMW i4 M50 – the closest thing you can get to an electric M4 right now – manage to keep up? Carwow attempts to answer that question in their latest video as they pit the new kid on the block against the king of the hill in a series of races.

The first test is a quarter mile drag race, and surprisingly, it sees the BMW get the jump on the Tesla at the start and keep pulling away for the remainder of the race. The second drag race was a bit more even with the Model 3 just inches ahead of the i4 for the majority of the race, but it was ultimately the BMW that managed to take the checkered flag first.

The third test is a roll race from 30 mph (48 km/h), and it sees the Tesla pull away immediately and finish just over a car’s length ahead of the BMW, despite the i4’s best efforts to claw back at it at the end. Just for the sake of it, they actually continued the race after the quarter mile ended, and found that the i4 breezed past the Model 3 at higher speeds. The fourth and final test is another roll race, this time from 50 mph (80 km/h), and it really showcases the BMW’s high-speed advantage. The Tesla got a bit ahead at the start, but the BMW managed to catch up quickly and win the race.
