A number of all-electric Volta Zero trucks will be tested throughout the streets of London this summer.

The trucks will be provided by the Swedish start-up to The Crown Estate, a large property owner in London’s expensive West End. The Crown Estate’s London portfolio spans 10 million square-feet of property and will be well-suited to the Volta Zero that offers up a range varying between 95 miles (153 km) and 125 miles (201 km).

“The full-electric Volta Zero is specifically designed for zero-emission urban distribution with exactly The Crown Estate and Clipper Logistics’ use case in mind,” said Volta Trucks chief executive Essa Al-Saleh. “And with 8.6-tonnes of payload, it was created to consolidate deliveries and reduce congestion of smaller vehicles on city center streets. I look forward to seeing The Crown Estate and Clipper Logistics-liveried vehicles operating on the famous streets of London’s West End in only a few months’ time.”

The Volta Zero can be fitted with either a 150 kWh or 225 kWh battery pack and has been designed to replace several smaller delivery vans. It was unveiled in production guise last November after being first showcased as a concept in October 2019.

Volta is currently building prototypes of the Zero in the UK and plans to have completed 25 of them this month. Interestingly, eventual production models won’t be built in the UK and will instead be manufactured at a new plant in Steyr, Austria starting in the middle of the year. Logistics provider DB Schenker placed an order for 1,470 Volta Zero trucks late last year.
