A former senior BMW executive has been charged with corruption by prosecutors in Munich, Germany.

The individual has been hit with 18 counts of commercial corruption and 33 counts of breach of trust at the expense of the car manufacturer. He is also said to have defrauded the car manufacturer to the tune of €2.7 million ($3.06 million).

While some details about the case are unclear, Reuters understands that the executive allegedly received €2.4 million ($2.7 million) in kickbacks between 2007 and 2015 in exchange for awarding consulting contracts.

A further four individuals have been charged in the case. These include the managing director of a now-insolvent consulting firm who has been accused of bribery, as well as aiding and abetting embezzlement.

All five individuals have denied the charges leveled against them.

These reports come after the German car manufacturer unveiled a number of intriguing technologies at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The first of these technologies has been showcased on an all-electric iX that sports ink with electrophoric technology that changes color when stimulated by electrical signals.

BMW has also used CES to unveil a new rear-seat entertainment system with its Theatre Screen. The system consists of a 31-inuch retractable display with 8K resolution that extends from the headliner at the press of a button. The display includes 5G connectivity and is equipped with Amazon Fire TV.
