Driving brings with it all kinds of risks but one risk we had never thought of having to deal with is a towbar falling off the car traveling in front of you. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to a motorist in Australia in late January and the entire thing was caught on dashcam.

During the clip, the cammer can be seen traveling behind a Toyota Hilux on the South Eastern Freeway in South Australia. They are driving at a very safe distance from the Hilux but not even that helped them as at the 7-second mark of the video, the towbar of the Hilux can be seen falling off. It bounces off the road multiple times, somersaulting through the air before slamming into the windshield of the cammer.

The force of the impact doesn’t just crack the windshield but rips a massive hole in it and the towbar itself knocks the dashcam off its mounting.

Had any occupants inside the car been hit by the towbar, they could have very easily been killed. However, the driver was not hit and managed to avoid any serious injury, other than a few cuts from the glass. The driver later posted to a local page on Facebook asking the owner of the Hilux to come forward. Authorities who reported to the scene say the driver of the Toyota probably had no idea the towbar fell off.

It remains unclear why the towbar fell off the way that it did but it’s entirely possible it had not been secured by a hitch pin.
