Select Hyundai Sonata, Elantra, and Santa Fe models have been recalled as the windshield could fall out during a crash.
Hyundai has revealed that 2021 Sonata, 2021 Elantra, and 2020-2021 Santa Fe models may have been assembled with non-confirming flow additive that was mixed with the production paint clear coat that results in inadequate adhesion of the front windshield to the vehicle. Owners of impacted vehicles may notice wind noise or water leaking from the windshield.

The windshield comes from supplier Axalta which started to investigate the issue in February 2021 but tests conducted at that time showed no signs of poor adhesion. Fast forward to November and Axalta issued a recall for a specific production lot of windshields and identified Hyundai as a company impacted. Hyundai later performed its own internal testing and discovered that vehicles using Axalta’s paint had lower adhesion than vehicles using a separate supplier’s paint.
Impacted 2021 Sonata and 2020-2021 Santa Fe models were built between October 29, 2020 and December 17, 2020 while impacted Elantra models were built between October 29, 2020 and January 8, 2021. A total of 9,596 Sonatas are being recalled alongside 8,561 Santa Fes and 8,256 Elantras.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified via first class mail no later than February 25, 2022 and instructed to take their vehicle to a Hyundai dealership where the windshield will be removed and reinstalled with properly formulated material.
