NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are all the rage with people who have more money than sense, so it was only a matter of time before automakers decided to cash in on the craze.
The latest is Lamborghini, which has unveiled its Space Key. Developed in collaboration with an undisclosed artist, the Space Key isn’t a key in the traditional sense as it’s simply a piece of an advanced carbon fiber composite material that was sent to the International Space Station in 2019 and used as part of a joint research project.
Once the material returned to earth and testing was complete, Lamborghini had some ‘space junk’ on their hands. As a result, they turned it into five Space Keys which feature a unique QR code that takes owners to an “exclusive and purely digital [piece of] artwork.”

While NFTs are slightly ridiculous, the Space Key is interesting as it combines digital art with a physical item that has traveled to space. There’s a sizable market for the latter and given Lamborghini’s involvement, there will likely be quite a bit of demand.
Speaking of which, the Space Keys will be auctioned at a later date but Lamborghini is staying tight-lipped on specifics. They’re only saying, “Further details will be shared in the following days and weeks, including the name of the artist of the Space Key and digital artwork, the nature of this unique piece of art, the auction house, as well as the date and time of the auction with the link to the auction registration.”
While a number of questions remain unanswered, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said “Innovation is a deeply rooted part of the Lamborghini DNA” and “the NFT world has been calling to us, and we are excited about engaging with this very passionate and innovative community.”
