Since the Cybertrunk made its public debut back in 2019, fans of the electric truck that looks like nothing else have been clamoring for the EV to make it into production. But according to a recent report, Tesla could be pushing the Cybertruck’s launch back to 2023.

This report comes after the company made a series of changes to the Cybertruck’s website — first removing all mention of price, then quietly scrubbing the truck’s production date. Now, according to Reuters, an unnamed source familiar with the matter claims that initial production of the Cybertruck will not get underway until the end of the first quarter in 2023 .

When it was first shown, Elon Musk claimed that the Cybertruck would hit the market by 2021. However, in August of last year, Tesla confirmed that production plans had been pushed back to 2022. Musk later stated that production would be delayed yet again until late 2022 and that significant volume production will not be achieved until late 2023.

One reason cited within the report is the added competition in the electric truck space. Unlike the march it stole on its competitors in the sedan segment, Tesla is in the unfamiliar position of being on the back foot. Ford’s F-150 Lightning has already seen unexpected demand, with plans to double production already afoot. EV startup Rivian delivered its first R1T electric pickups last year, with production ramping up in 2022.

It’s thought that Tesla may be changing features and functions of the Cybertruck in order to remain competitive. The claim is similar to Stellantis’ approach with their electric RAM pickup truck, with Carlos Tavares confirming that their yet-to-be-revealed offering is being adjusted as the company looks at what its competitors are doing.

If the report is true, customers who put a deposit down when the Cybertruck was first revealed will end up having waited almost four years for delivery.
