The used car market is blowing up in a way that we’ve never seen before and classic or exotic cars are rocketing even higher. Bring a Trailer just had the biggest year in the history of car auction businesses and Mecum started off 2022 with a record-breaking $200 million dollar event of their own.

Now, a Porsche Carrera GT has set a new record for the model for the second time in as many months and for the first time hit $2,000,000. In other words, more than four times its original price tag.

Last month, Bring a Trailer had its most expensive sale ever when a Guards Red Porsche Carrera GT sold for $1,902,000. Of course, that car had triple the mileage of this 250-mile silver example. This one went for exactly $2,000,000 and comes with quite a lot.

The 2005 Porsche Carrera GT comes with a complete set of custom luggage

Of course, the standard 603-horsepower 5.7-liter V10 that was originally developed for racing is there as is the six-speed manual transmission and the F1-style inboard suspension. That’s all standard fare on the Carrera GT, or as many call it, the last analog supercar.

What isn’t always included is the complete set of custom luggage, the pair of original keys, and the library worth of paperwork going back to the day the car was ordered. Realistically, this car is in near-new condition. Over its lifetime it’s driven just 14 or so miles on average each year.

Let’s talk a little bit about that price tag though. Four times the original sticker sounds like a lot on paper but think of it this way. Imagine owning a car like this and after 15+ years of driving it so little only getting four times what you originally paid.

To us, that sounds like a pretty raw deal. While 99% of us here think of $1.5 million as life-changing, the kind of people who buy and sell $500,000 cars often don’t.

Regardless of price tag or mileage we simply hope that the new owner treats this Carrera GT as it was meant to be. It’s a proper supercar and it should have some time to stretch its legs as well as some Saturday mornings as Cars and Coffee.
