Toyota has confirmed that buyers of the new Land Cruiser in Japan will have to wait up to four years to take delivery.
Demand for the new Land Cruiser has been high ever since its unveiling and in September last year, this prompted reports that there was a four-year wait-list in Japan. At the time, Toyota had received 21,500 local orders for the Land Cruiser just two weeks after its unveiling, despite only expecting to sell 5,000 units each year in Japan.

Toyota issued an apology and an explanation for the situation on its Japanese website.
“We sincerely apologize for the fact that Land Cruiser has been very well received not only in Japan but also around the world, and it is expected that it will take a long time to deliver it after receiving an order,” the Japanese carmaker wrote. “The delivery time for ordering from now on may be about 4 years. We will do our utmost to shorten the delivery time of our customers, and we appreciate your understanding.”
The automaker didn’t say if supply challenges are also playing a role in the backlog but they likely are.
It remains unclear if other markets will be significantly impacted and if buyers overseas will also encounter lengthy delivery delays. Customer deliveries did start in December in Australia, however.
There is no word if deliveries of the Lexus LX 600 could be delayed as it is built at the same plant as the Land Cruiser. Fortunately for U.S. consumers, the Lexus LX 600 is sold in far fewer markets than its Toyota sibling and will not sell in the same numbers.
