The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 has been named MotorTrend’s Performance Vehicle of the Year, once again proving that whenever Porsche releases a new 911 GT3, it is bound to be exceptional.
This year’s MotorTrend Performance Vehicle of the Year test consisted of a star-studded line-up of vehicles all fighting for the top prize. These were the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R, Subaru BRZ, Toyota GR86, Porsche Taycan Turbo S, Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0, Honda Civic Si, Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition, Ford Mustang Mach 1, BMW M5 CS, BMW M4, BMW Alpina XB7, BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe, Audi RS Q8, Acura TLX Type S, BMW M3 Competition, Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, Cadillac GT5-V Blackwing, Hyundai Veloster N, Lamborghini Huracan STO, Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, Porsche 911 GT3, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT.

This list was eventually whittled down to eight finalists, consisting of the M3 Competition, CT4-V Blackwing, CT5-V Blackwing, Veloster N, Huracan STO, AMG GT Black Series, 911 GT3 and Cayenne Turbo GT.
In determining its Performance Vehicle of the Year, Motor Trend looks at six key criteria: Advancement in Design, Engineering Excellence, Performance of Intended Function, Safety, Value, and Efficiency. The ultimate version of the 992-generation Porsche 911 performed well in all of these categories, even though it doesn’t have an official crash rating and at $164,150, isn’t exactly cheap. However, when compared to rivals like the Lamborghini Huracan STO ($442,033) and Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series ($355,595), it represents pretty good value.
MotorTrend’s team of testers were particularly impressed by the extraordinary amounts of grip offered up by the double-wishbone front suspension, meaning it is the first Porsche 911 that doesn’t require trail-braking into every corner. Every other performance aspect of the GT3 is impressive, from its 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated flat-six engine through to the excellent transmission and braking performance.
The publication once asked how the 991.2-generation Porsche 911 GT3 could be improved upon. Somehow, Porsche’s new GT3 is significantly better and with a new GT3 RS just around the corner, things may only get better from here.
