Our spies caught a new camouflaged BMW X1 M35i xDrive during winter testing in Sweden. We’ve added a fresh batch of spy photos in the gallery below. (Updated 2/28/2022)
The new-generation BMW X1 is expected to arrive in 2022 and our spy photographers caught a camouflaged prototype of the most powerful variant testing on both public roads and the track. The BMW X1 M35i xDrive will not be a full-blown M model but a performance-focused SUV fitted with all the necessary M Performance goodies.
The X1 will ride on an evolved version of the UKL/FAAR platform that underpins all compact BMW and MINI models including the recently revealed 2-Series Active Tourer. The flagship X1 M35i is expected to come fitted with the company’s 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine exclusively mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and combined with the standard xDrive AWD system.

The same powertrain is used in the M135i hatchback, the M235i Gran Coupe, and the X2 M35i where it produces 302 hp (225 kW / 306 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. The new generation X1 though might feature increased power and torque figures, with rumors stating above 350 hp (261 kW / 355 PS). This would allow the hot SUV to slot right between the rival Mercedes-AMG GLA 35, and the even more powerful GLA 45 S.
Besides the punchy engine, the X1 M35i xDrive will be fitted with larger brakes, a stiffer suspension setup, and a different tune for the steering to make it more of a driver’s SUV.
The M35i will come as standard with a more aggressive body kit, which will include sporty front and rear bumpers, side sill extensions, body-colored fenders, and a more pronounced rear spoiler.
As suggested by the spy photos, the hot X1 will also feature quad tailpipes, which in typical BMW fashion will be fully functional and not just for show. Those are the reason behind the rumors for a full-blown X1 M which is highly unlikely to happen given the FWD-based platform and the fact that BMW is not willing to invest heavily in such variants of their compact range. While quad tailpipes were reserved for M models in the past, it seems that we will gradually see them in sporty variants from M Performance.
The reveal of the BMW X1 range is expected within the next few months with production starting shortly after at the Regensburg plant in Germany.
