Cupra is celebrating its fourth anniversary today with the announcement of its 2022 plans called “Cupra x 2”. The automaker will introduce two new models, aiming to double its sales, turnover, and global network in 2022. Cupra also announced the “Metahype” space in the metaverse and a new “Cupra2” racing experience that combines the real and virtual worlds.
Starting with the new models, the fully electric Cupra Tavascan will arrive in 2024, followed by the production version of the UrbanRebel concept in 2025. Both of them are expected to be based on different versions of the MEB platform, with the Tavascan being a sibling to the VW ID.4 and the UrbanRebel being closely related to the upcoming VW ID.2. Those will join the new Cupra Born in the automaker’s EV range, and the existing ICE-powered Leon, Ateca, and Formentor.
The company will be doubling its network of Cupra Specialists and Cupra City Garages this year, in a quest to reach more prospective customers and double its sales figures in 2022. For the record, Cupra sold 79,300 units in 2021 which was 189% more than 2020. Wayne Griffiths, Cupra CEO said: “Four years ago, many people doubted us, but we never doubted ourselves. This year, we’ll prove once again that nothing can hold back our unstoppable impulse.”

Metahype And Dual-World Racing
Moving over to the tech-related announcements, the “Metahype” is Cupra’s take of the Metaverse. It is described as a space of immersive virtual reality experiences where brands, startups, and content creators will be able to host a variety of events. Activities will include showcasing NFTs, digital and physical products, and content streaming. The Metahype was developed in collaboration with VISYON of Mediapro Group. Cupra will have its own hub within the platform and has already announced that music and entertainment companies Primavera Sound and UBEAT will be joining the digital world.
The Metahype is not the only digital project announced by Cupra since the brand will soon launch the Cupra2 Experience, allowing users to combine real and virtual racing. As explained by Antonino Labate, Cupra’s Director of Strategy, Business Development, and Operations: “With our all-electric UrbanRebel, we’re bringing the Cupra2 Experience to the world, a unique racing experience where what you drive is real, but what you see is virtual”, adding that they are “ready to shake up the traditional motorsport format”. Before the launch of the new experience, Cupra will be auctioning an NFT of the UrbanRebel concept, with the buyer being one of the first people to try the new racing experience.
