It takes a special kind of person to look at a car like the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and think “Yeah, that thing needs more power.” Evidently, John Hennessey thought just that, leading to the creation of the Venom 1000.

Not to be confused with Hennessey’s Venom F5 hypercar, the Venom 1000 takes a standard Shelby GT500 and gives it a healthy dose of additional power, turning it into an absolute animal. While most of us will never have the opportunity to drive a vehicle like this, the tuner has put together a video starring its director of research and development, Jason Haynes, putting the car through its paces and showing just what it is capable of.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 leaves the factory with a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 rated at 760 hp and 625 lb-ft (847 Nm) of torque. It is one of the best bang-for-your-buck performance cars on the market and Hennessey’s variant pushes the performance to new heights.

As the name of the Venom 1000 suggests, the package results in a maximum output of 1,000 hp while Hennessey has also upped torque to 850 lb-ft (1,152 Nm) of torque. Interestingly, the car retains its original supercharger but the tuner has upgraded the factory supercharger cooling bricks, fitted a new supercharger pulley, and installed a new intercooler. There are also upgraded fuel lines and fittings, an air/oil separator, heavy-duty tensioners, and anodized billet fuel rails. The car also has a flex-fuel setup meaning it can run on E85 ethanol.

While testing out the car on Hennessey’s test circuit, Haynes is able to hit some pretty scary speeds in the blink of an eye. However, given how prone Mustang owners are to crashing, we’d rather Hennessey have some kind of vetting process to ensure those that purchase a Venom 1000 actually know how to drive and control it.
