Volkswagen has one of the most populous SUV ranges in the world but the automaker keeps adding new models to the mix. The latest example is a medium-to-large SUV spied testing in Europe, rumored to be the Talagon X produced by the VW-FAW joint venture for China.
Our sources suggest that the new SUV is codenamed VW416/3, hinting at a new variant of the Talagon (VW416/2) – possibly called the Talagon X or the Grand X. The prototype is lightly camouflaged revealing characteristic VW styling cues in the front grille, bumper intakes, and full-width taillights, although it is not yet fitted with the final production lighting units. The proportions and greenhouse look similar to the Talagon but the body panels are different, and the rear windshield seems to be slightly more heavily inclined.

The regular Talagon was launched last year by VW-FAW as Volkswagen’s largest SUV yet with a length of 5,152 mm (202.8 inches) based on a stretched version of the MQB platform. Sibling models include the Terramont and Terramont X by SAIC-VW, as well as the VW Atlas.
The rumored Talagon X could be a smaller, five-seater variant based on the same underpinnings, measuring around 4.9 meters (192.9 inches) long which is larger than the Tayron. Under the bonnet, we expect to see the 2.0 TSI four-cylinder engine, mated to the seven-speed DSG transmission. A more powerful derivative with the 2.5 TSI V6 from the Talagon could also be on the cards, coupled with the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.
Despite testing in Sweden, Europe, the new SUV will be reserved for the Chinese market. The official debut of the new model is expected in late 2022 or early 2023.
