Jaguar is developing a new platform for its future electric vehicles in-house.
The British car manufacturer will become an electric-only brand from 2025 onwards and was initially expected to source an EV platform from a third party. However, while speaking during an investors call, Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Thierry Bolloré confirmed the company is going it alone.
JLR chief financial officer Adrian Mardell revealed that the new platform is dubbed ‘Panthera’. It is unclear exactly why Jaguar has decided to develop its own platform but Autocar suggests it could have something to do with JLR design chief Gerry McGovern pushing for the company’s vehicles to look unique.

“Concerning the new Jaguar, we’re making unique proportion a priority. That’s the reason why at the moment we do it by ourselves,” Bollore said. “The proportions are crucial to get what we want from Jaguar. The platform is a consequence of proportions we’ve decided on. They’re absolutely bespoke.”
As Jaguar transitions into an electric-only automaker, the company will make an aggressive push upmarket and aims to establish itself as a rival to Bentley. That’s a bold plan and the automaker has confirmed that it will initially launch two electric crossovers and a two-door coupe.
While Jaguar develops its future range of EVs, very little of note will be released by the automaker. In fact, it confirmed in late 2021 that it will not launch any all-new products until 2025. This move could force the carmaker to shrink its workforce.
