Like every automaker, Lamborghini is looking forward to an electrified future. However, although it has promised to introduce electrified supercars soon, that doesn’t mean it has given up on combustion engines yet.
Speaking to Germany’s Welt am Sonntag, Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann said that the company is looking at ways to keep engines alive past 2030 when a number of automakers expect to be selling only EVs.
“After hybridization, we will wait and see whether it will be possible to offer vehicles with a combustion engine beyond 2030,” said Winkelmann. “One possibility would be to keep the combustion engines alive with synthetic gasoline.”

Synthetic fuel is being invested in by Porsche, Lamborghini’s stablemate in the VW Group. Synthetic fuel is said to be greener than regular fuel, though it requires a lot of energy to produce and unless that’s all renewable, its green bona fides are questionable.
Studies have shown that the fuel is only green in small quantities and experts have, therefore, suggested that it should be reserved for industries that can’t go all-electric, like long-distance trucking and flying. With sports like Formula 1 investing in the technology, though, synthetic fuels will have an association with high-performance vehicles.
“We expect our customers to accept these cars – if the promise is kept that the performance of the vehicles is better than that of the previous generation,” said Winkelmann. “The combination with the electric drive will bring more power to our vehicles, coupled with a better CO2 balance.”
Lamborghini will introduce its first hybrid in 2024 and its first fully electric vehicle will be unveiled before the end of the decade. Winkelmann has previously suggested that it will be a 2+2 or four-seater with crossover design tendencies.
