There’s no getting around the dark truth. The non-hybridized V8 sedan is almost exclusively a thing restrained to the history books. Thankfully, Cadillac is sending it off in a grand way and that’s under the hood of the amazing CT5-V Blackwing.

Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire dropped a new video of the Caddy this week after removing a recent one with almost nothing but the sound of the 6.2-liter LT4 engine howling away. It’s a fiery reminder of something we’ll always miss.

It’s fitting that the CT5-V Blackwing isn’t just special because of the engine. As what we expect to be the last non-hybrid V8 sedan in American history, it’s a proper world-fighting four-door supercar.

When lapped around Virginia International Raceway it was faster than a Ferrari 458, an SRT Viper TA, and the Acura NSX. Those are proper supercars in their own right. Keep in mind too that it can handle hauling four grown adults around in serious luxury too.

The CT5-V Blackwing doesn’t disappoint either with its burbbly unsettled engine wailing away. Driving through California canyons can be fun in almost any car but with 668-horsepower and 659 lb-ft (892Nm) of peak torque, the Cadillac provides more than ample thrust. As Farah engages the clutch and downshifts we get the pleasure of hearing the engine rev-match as the exhaust cracks and pops. It’s shouty and dramatic in all of the best ways.

It sounds just like a dragon that’s making its presence known before it ultimately fades away. Real dragons never existed but if they had, it stands to reason that we would’ve been a bit relieved and at the same time sad to see them go. It feels fitting for the CT5-V Blackwing to sing the same song.

It’s clear that if the V8 has to go away, it’s at least doing it from under the hood of a car that makes the very most of its incredible power and sound.
