A beautifully maintained 1991 Ferrari F40 is expected to sell for between $2.4 million and $2.8 million when it crosses the auction block at Gooding & Company’s Amelia Island sales event from March 4.
Of the 1,350 examples of the F40 that were built, 213 were U.S.-specification models and this is one of them. It is finished in Ferrari’s iconic color of Rosso Corsa and delivered new in September 1991 to Harold W. Sherrill of Hickory, North Carolina.

Sherrill clearly loved the car and owned it until August 2013 when it was acquired by Michael Grondahl of New Hampshire with 3,631 miles (5,843 km) on its odometer. Shortly after taking ownership, Grondahl sent the car to a local Ferrari dealership where all the fluids were changed, the timing belts and tensioners were replaced, the cam covers were refinished, and updated front and rear lower-suspension mounting forks were also installed. The supercar was also given a Ferrari Classiche certification at the time.
The car then moved into the hands of the current seller in March 2018 where another major service was performed. The F40 will now head to auction with 3,779 miles (6,081 km) under its belt and comes with all its original books, tools, covers, window sticker, documentation, and Ferrari Classiche Red Book.
Given the low mileage of the car, it comes as no surprise that it is presented in excellent condition, both inside and out. Speaking of the cabin, it is particularly special as it is finished in Stofa Vigogna cloth across the carbon fiber-backed bucket seats.
As a reminder, the F40 is powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with Weber-Marelli electronic fuel injection and delivering 478 hp at 7,000 rpm and coupled to a five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Like most performance cars, prices for used F40s have jumped over the last couple of years and while they were routinely trading hands for between $1 million and $1.5 million in 2019, one sold for $2,892,500 in August last year while another fetched $2,750,000 in January.
