As automotive enthusiasts, many of us spend sincerely large parts of our lives picking apart used car markets for interesting and fun dream projects. Never before has the used car market been as wild as it is right now either. Prices are sky high and it’s hard to find enthusiast favorites without paying a lot more than you might have just a couple of years ago. That makes today’s question even more interesting.
Sometimes, buying a car ends up being a bad choice because of things that we can’t possibly know at the beginning. Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire recently bought a Ferrari that came with forged service records so even experienced buyers can get the short end of the stick. At times, unusual major issues with a car only pop up after we buy a car and that’s nobody’s fault. Other times though, we shoot ourselves in the foot pretty badly.
People can experience a mental ownership that can take hold of them long before they sign on the dotted line and at times, that’s surely contributed to poor decisions. We can look at a car that we know will be horrible for us but we simply can’t pry ourselves away from the dream of what perfect ownership could be.

Then there’s a small subset of us that regret buying cars that end up being genuinely good. Thankfully, that’s not a product of poor experiences but it’s very possible to feel like your car owns you if you worry too much about keeping it clean or otherwise perfect. Some folks can’t use their car to the fullest because it concerns them so much.
For me, I don’t know that I full-on regret any car I’ve bought as in their own way, each one has led me here but at the same time, I really sincerely regret one recommendation I made years ago. My little brother asked if a particular wagon would be good for his young and burgeoning family.
With beaming pride that my little brother, who doesn’t ask me for much, would consider my opinion, I told him to go for it and that he’d love it. That wagon? A B6 Audi Allroad. Commence the laughing. It was exactly as horrible as every other Allroad and thankfully he sold it before it bankrupted him.
