Update: While NHTSA’s recall notice states that GM will send letters to Hummer EV owners on or around April 25, a GMC spokesperson reached out to us and said that the repairs on all 10 vehicles have already been completed.

Immediately following the recall decision on March 3, 2022, GMC HUMMER representatives proactively contacted these customers and made arrangements to replace the taillamps on these vehicles. Repairs have been completed on all 10 vehicles,” the spokesperson told us.

The Hummer electric pickup is so new there’s a good chance you haven’t even seen one on the road yet. But if you head down to your local dealer’s service department you might strike it lucky because GM has already recalled cars out in the wild to fix a potential taillight fault.

According to information logged with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) GM is recalling a handful of 2022 Hummers because defective taillight software can cause one or both rear lamps to stop working or become permanently lit.

GM only began delivering the Hummer last winter, and united just a single vehicle with its owner before New Year (much to Elon Musk’s delight), so the scale of the recall is relatively tiny. The NHTSA says only 10 vehicles are affected and that those trucks will have their left and right taillight assemblies inspected and replaced if necessary at no cost to the owner.

While not great news for GM’s publicity machine, or the reputation of its flagship EV, as recalls go, this one should come with a swift and fairly low-cost fix. Things aren’t looking so positive at Ford and Stellantis, who between them were forced to recall more than half a million vehicles earlier this week.

Almost 160,000 Ford F-150 trucks are being dragged back to dealers over concerns that their windshield wipers could fail, and more than 370,000 RAM 2500 and 3500s are being recalled because an ABS might not light if there’s an issue with the anti-lock braking system. Though the RAM issue seem on the face of it less serious than the Ford problem, the Stellantis brand had already announced a recall covering 170,000 RAM trucks for a wiper fix in February. If you need to book some service time at your RAM dealer you might find they’re suddenly pretty busy.
