Porsche’s GT division does not make a bad car and with the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS, it has delivered yet another spectacular model.
Unveiled late last year, the GT4 RS takes the already exciting GT4 and pushes performance to new heights. Members of the press recently had the opportunity to put it through its paces at Willow Springs Raceway and while these reviews will remain under embargo until March 22, Matt Farah has shared a compelling onboard video of the car being pushed to its limits at the track.

Found at the heart of the sports car is a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six pumping out 493 hp and 331 lb-ft (449 Nm) of torque. This gives the GT4 RS a significant power advantage over the regular GT4 that is capped at 414 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) and means it almost has as much grunt as the 911 GT3. Adding to the theater of this engine is the fact that it revs through to 9,000 rpm and, as you’ll discover when watching the video below, it sounds absolutely remarkable.
Whereas the Cayman GT4 can be ordered with a six-speed manual gearbox, the GT4 RS is sold exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission. We’re sure some enthusiasts would have liked to see a manual but the shorter gearing of the PDK seems to work wonders with the heavily-upgraded engine.
Porsche has also worked extensively on the suspension of the GT4 RS, fitted revised dampers, springs, and anti-roll bars. It also produces 25 per cent more downforce than the standard car and weighs 49 lbs (22 kg) less. Those after even more weight savings will be able to order the car with the Weissach Package that adds a carbon fiber hood, intakes, air-box lid, mirror caps, and rear wing, as well as a titanium exhaust, optional Magnesium wheels and Race-Tex interior upholstery.
