The 1991 Williams FW14 famously raced and owned by Formula 1 driver Nigel Mansell will be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s at a Monaco event in mid-May.
Mansell drove a number of cars throughout his successful F1 career but the FW14 is perhaps the most famous. He drove the car to second place in the 1991 season, finishing behind the great Ayrton Senna, and claimed race victories in France, the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain with the FW14.
This Williams F1 car is also instantly recognizable as the car that Mansell used to give Senna a ride when the Brazilian’s McLaren ran out of fuel on the final lap over the British GP. Following the conclusion of the 1991 season, the car was gifted to Mansell and has remained in his collection ever since. It is expected to sell for between €1.5 million and €3 million ($1.64 million – $3.27 million).

While each of the five races that Mansell won while driving the FW14 was special, his victory at the Spanish Grand Prix was particularly memorable thanks to the close race he had with Senna.
Images shared online by the auction house show that the car retains the same paint scheme that it had back in 1991, including the famous Camel branding and the yellow, blue, and white paint scheme. Among the key sponsors are Canon, Labatt’s, Renault, Elf, Goodyear, and Magneti Marelli.
Unfortunately, the Renault-sourced V10 engine of the FW14 was removed before the car was handed over to Mansell, meaning it doesn’t run and would best serve as a display piece in a museum or car collection. If someone was brave, they could install a new powertrain, possibly from the likes of Cosworth or Judd.
