Toyota will reduce production in April by 150,000 to 750,000 units as it slows its race to recoup production lost earlier in the year.
The Japanese car manufacturer had intended on producing over 900,000 vehicles monthly for the coming few months but from April to June, will lower its global output to around 800,000 vehicles a month on average. Toyota describes the move as an “intentional pause.”

“By doing this, we will establish healthy workplace environments that place the highest priority on safety and quality, rather than exceeding the capacities of facilities, pushing people to their limits, and making do through overtime work,” Toyota stated. “We will then inform our suppliers of plans that incorporate production reduction risks and other factors up to three months in advance, review production plans on a monthly and three-monthly basis, and share these plans with our suppliers.”
Toyota has acknowledged that due to the semiconductor shortage, ongoing COVID-19 risks, and various other factors, it is difficult for it to look several months ahead and says there’s a possibility that its production plan may be lower.
Production changes at Toyota’s Tsutsumi Plant where the Corolla Sport and Camry are built will see production paused on April 4 and April 5. The Tahara Plant building the Lexus LS, IS, RC, RC F, and NX will also be paused on April 4 and 5. Production at the Miyata Plant will be halted on April 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 18, and 19. The Lexus NX, NX PHEV, CT, UX, and UX BEV are built here. The second production line at the Miyata Plant will be paused on April 1, impacting the Lexus ES and RX.
Elsewhere, Toyota will stop production at two production lines of its Iwate Plant on April 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 16, and 23. This will impact the C-HR, Aqua, Yaris, and Yaris Cross. Last but not least is the Fujimatsu Plant where production of the Noah and Voxy will be halted on April 1 and 4.
