The Volkswagen ID.Life that debuted in concept form at the 2021 IAA Mobility in Munich might not evolve into the ID.2 production model rumored for 2025. A new report from German media outlet Automobilwoche states that the project has “fallen out of favor” in Wolfsburg, with the design team working on a new styling approach for the entry-level EV.
The ID.Life came with minimalist retro-infused styling but according to the sources of automotive journalist George Kacher, VW is not happy with the outcome and will opt for a full redesign. The report states that chief designer Jozef Kaban and his team are already working on a new “decidedly modern design” for the production model, while focusing on multimedia and connectivity features that could “captivate young customers”.

The VW ID.2 is expected to arrive in 2025 as a Polo-sized five-door electric hatchback based on a shortened version of VW Group’s MEB platform with clever packaging resulting in a Golf-sized cabin. The goal for VW was to offer it with an entry price of €20,000 (~$22,000), making it its most affordable EV offering. Another model called VW ID.2 X with SUV styling features will allegedly follow in 2026, as the electric equivalent of the ICE-powered T-Cross.
Besides the VW ID.2 and ID.2 X, other models sharing the same underpinnings will be the production version of the Cupra UrbanRebel concept, an urban crossover from Seat, and another entry-level EV from Skoda.
Contradicting the report, a VW spokesperson told Automotive News Europe that the ID.Life had been “extremely well-received” both internally and externally while denying rumors about a new concept. However, the fact that VW has recently restarted production and availability of the e-Up! in Europe could hint at a delay in the aforementioned project.
The VW ID range currently consists of the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and soon the ID. Buzz, with six more additions to the family by 2027 including a midsize sedan expected to debut at the Beijing Auto Show next month.
