Wiesmann is following up on its promise to unveil a brand new model in 2022 and has just revealed a few teaser images of that vehicle called Project Thunderball. Set to go into production alongside the also unreleased Project Gecko teased a few years ago, the new sports car is said to be a “sports car befitting the modern era”.

After noticing that the vehicle lacked exhaust pipes and it did not make any sounds in the teaser video shared, we reached out to Wiesmann to see if it was electric. And indeed, a spokesperson confirmed to CarScoops that it’s the German brand’s first ever EV.

“As the automotive industry undergoes its biggest revolution in a century, there can be no better time to announce the return of a refreshed, reborn and recharged motoring icon,” says Roheen Berry, owner of Wiesmann.”Thunderball will continue Wiesmann’s reputation for setting the standard for performance, craftsmanship and sheer enjoyment. With its unequivocal style, this is the Wiesmann fit for the 21st century, and this is just the beginning”.

The entire automotive industry is slowly but surely making the transition to electrified powertrains, so it only makes sense for Wiesmann to follow.

What about the Project Gecko?

This a break from Project Gecko and other previous Wiesmann models. We know a little about the mechanics of Gecko, namely that it’s supposed to use a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 BMW engine and an automatic transmission. In the teaser for Project Gecko, Wiesmann didn’t just hint at a big gas-powered engine with exhaust noise, they showed it off and went as far as to exhibit it roaring on a dyno.

Regardless, we’re very excited at the prospect of a new beautiful and bespoke sports car coming out of the European market whether it’s electric, as in the case of the Thunderball, or good ‘ol gasoline-fueled, as in the case of the Gecko.
