Spy photographers are giving us a more revealing look at the second-generation of the Hyundai Kona as the Koreans press ahead with the subcompact crossover’s development ahead of a launch likely late next year as a 2024 model .
Starting in the cabin, we can see a higher quality cockpit that is heavily influenced by the Ioniq 5. The similarities are immediately apparent as drivers sit behind a new steering wheel and find themselves looking at a digital instrument cluster that appears to flow into a familiar infotainment system.

Further below, we can see slender air vents with metallic accents. They’re joined by a row of dedicated infotainment buttons as well as a rotary volume controller. Speaking of knobs, there are three dials for the crossover’s climate control system.
While the exterior is still covered by bulky padding, the front fender is showing a bit of skin. As a result, we can see the model will feature edgier fender flares and a sharp shoulder line.
The rest of the design is heavily disguised, but the Kona will feature split headlights, an upward sweeping beltline, and a sloping roof. There isn’t much to see out back, but we can get a glimpse of new taillights and vertical turn signals that may only be temporary.
Hyundai has been tight-lipped about the Kona, but previous spy photos have revealed the crossover will be offered with a hybridized 1.6-liter engine that is presumably shared with the 2023 Kia Niro. In the latter model, the powertrain produces a combined output of 139 hp (104 kW / 141 PS) and 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque. More importantly, it enables the Niro to return a combined fuel economy rating of approximately 53 mpg.
We can also expect a new Kona EV and it will likely have a 64.8 kWh battery pack that powers a 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) electric motor. This setup enables the Niro EV to have a range of around 253 miles (407 km).
