When you get to buy a brand new Bugatti, you also get virtually endless options to spec your new hypercar. One new owner just took delivery of a pair of Chirons (!) and each one features a paint job that was completed by hand over the course of five weeks. What’s incredible is that the artwork is so skillful that five weeks kind of makes sense.
Each paint job is inspired by the way that light interacts naturally with the curvaceous body of the Chiron. In fact, the first car we’ll talk about, a Chiron Super Sport, looks like it’s moving even when it’s standing still. That’s a played-out cliché but take a look and you’ll see what we mean.
Named the “Vagues de Lumière”, or waves of light in French, the California Blue base color is heavily accented by big bright orange stripes, a color Bugatti calls Arancia Mira. Unlike so many other striped paint jobs, this one actually makes the car look like it’s reflecting the lights in a tunnel from just about every angle.

The light theme continues beautifully onto the other car, a Chiron Pur Sport which looks considerably more subtle despite the fact that it too has very similar stripes. Blue carbon bodywork makes up the majority of the color while Nocturne black accent stripes are carefully placed across the car to emulate the way light and shadow balance one another out.
Frankly, it’s amazing what can be done with an unlimited budget and imagination. Some of the photographs make it hard to differentiate where the paint ends and the real light or shadow begins. That’s not far off from the famous French painting technique of Trompe-l’œil.
Bugatti says that its craftspeople begin by applying 2D shapes to the 3D body with “millimeter-perfection”. From there, the workers paint layer upon layer until the right illusion of light is created. Then, Bugatti finishes with a clear coat and invites the new owner to come to see the artwork.
Both vehicles are just the latest to come out of the Sur Mesure or tailored experience that the French automaker offers to its customers.
