If you were to simply look at the new Range Rover from the front end, you could be excused for thinking it was hardly any different from the model it replaces. Dig a little deeper, however, and you will find a number of significant improvements that have been made to it.

Unveiled back in October 2021 and recently put through its paces by Top Gear, the 2022 Range Rover is built around Land Rover’s new MLA-Flex architecture that will eventually allow the automaker to offer it with ICE, PHEV, and EV powertrains.

This particular review was conducted in the U.S. where the 2022 Range Rover is initially available with a mild-hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, as well as a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 sourced from BMW and churning out 523 hp and 553 lb-ft.

Loads of impressive technologies are found within the new SUV. For example, rear-wheel steering is standard across the range and can provide up to 7 degrees of steering angle at low speeds, resulting in a turning circle of just 36 feet (11 m). Air springs and adaptive dampers are also featured alongside a 48-volt electronic roll control system.

During the review, Top Gear’s Jason Barlow says he spoke to the Range Rover’s program director and asked what aspect of the SUV he was most proud of. He responded, “the refinement.” Barlow is full of praise for just how luxurious and smooth the new Range Rover is to drive, noting that it’s hard to tell the 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel powering the unit he drove is even there.
