When Ford introduced the 2022 F-150 Lightning last year, it estimated the dual motor powertrain in the standard-range variant would develop 426 hp (318 kW / 432 PS), while the extended-range model would have 563 hp (420 kW / 571 PS).

While those numbers were nothing to sneeze at, they were simply targeted figures. Now that the truck has gone into production, Ford has revealed the model is more powerful than originally estimated.

According to Road & Track, the standard-range pickup actually produces 452 hp (337 kW / 458 PS) and this is an improvement of 26 hp (19 kW / 26 PS). The extended-range variant is also more powerful than expected as it develops 580 hp (433 kW / 588 PS) for an increase of 17 hp (13 kW / 17 PS).

While the torque rating remains unchanged at 775 lb-ft (1,051 Nm) for both variants, the payload capacity has increased 235 lbs (107 kg) to 2,235 lbs (1,014 kg).

In a statement to the publication, F-150 Lightning engineering manager Dapo Adewusi said: “We were seriously focused on raising the bar on this truck, including after we revealed it, so we can deliver more for our customers.” He added that “Our drive for continuous improvement will get a big boost when we start getting feedback and ideas from customers when they receive their Lightnings.”

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning went into production earlier this week and offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 320 miles (515 km). The truck also isn’t a slouch as the extended-range variant can accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in the “mid-4-second range” and this makes it the fastest-accelerating F-150 yet.
