A Lake Barrington, Illinois, man was arrested at 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, and charged with using what police describe as a metal object to damage more than 100 vehicles at three car dealerships in the nearby Chicago suburb of Schaumberg.
The suspect, 27-year-old Andrew McAuliff, was apprehended after a security guard called police and stands accused of damaging a total of 116 vehicles, reports NBC 5 Chicago. He allegedly used the metal object to break the rear windows of the vehicles at Bob Rohrman Honda, Bob Rohrman Ford, and Patrick BMW, three dealerships located on the same block, according to Schaumberg Police.
It appears, though, that the vandal targeted the glass and didn’t do any further damage to any of the vehicles. After a security guard noticed the damaged vehicles, he called the police and officers chased McAuliff and caught him some distance away from the dealerships, a witness said.

Matthew Ashford, the general manager of the Honda dealership, told the Daily Herald that he had never seen anything like this and is worried that supply chain disruptions may make the rear windows hard to replace. He added that the business plans to press charges, while roughly 20 of the cars were owned by clients who may also press charges. Reports suggest that the damage caused by the vandalism of which McAuliff is accused amounted to approximately $250,000 at the Honda dealership alone.
The Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Office has approved two felony counts of Criminal Damage to Property, meaning that McAuliff faces Class 3 felony charges.
